Being a Good Culinary Sport

I am either exceptionally gullible or way too accommodating. It's stinking hot outside and I'm baking hockey skates.

No really.

Andrew's skates are sub par and an extremely generous friend gave him these top-of-the-line Mission S500s. How fancy are these? Eight hours before you use them for the first time, you warm them up and put them on. This molds the lining to your feet. So, out of respect for our national sport*, we put my new oven thermometer to use. We set the stove to 110F and popped the skates in for 10 minutes.

Andrew put them on...

..and waited 15 minutes while they did their magic. Done.

Not quite.

Now Andrew tells me he's supposed to wear them daily for a while. So, to protect the blades and keep the customized fit, it's a week of razor sharp hockey skates indoors. Whoever invented this high-flying molding technology didn't have wood floors and two long-tailed cats.

*I know. I know. Lacrosse is officially Canada's national sport. While this fact will win you points in Trivial Pursuit, I defy you to hum the lacrosse theme music. On the other hand, the long-standing but soon-to-be-retired theme song for Hockey Night in Canada is not only familiar to the average Canuck, it's also handy for driving unwanted jingles from your head. This tip courtesy of Mike Myers.

Do you need hairy legs to play hockey?

Wait ... is that they song with all the Hey!'s in it?

I'll have to try that next time I get a song or jingle stuck in my head. Lately, those credit report songs are killing me.

Good luck with skate fitting. It's an interesting process. Don't they make blade protectors for hockey skates like the ones for figure skates?

Clearly, I'm clueless.

Anonymous, you have it backwards. Playing hockey gives you hairy legs.

Roxanne, they do have skate guards but I'm not sure if they have to be special or not. I'm clueless, too.

The Hockey Night in Canada theme doesn't have any lyrics. It sounds like this:

The song you're referring to is commonly played at games. I believe it's called "Kiss Him Good-bye". You can listen on YouTube at:

Wow! I just answered a musical question. Who knew they existed outside of game shows? Thanks for playing.

I say you bake some cookies along with the skates next time so at least when your hubby skates around the house gouging your lovely floors he'll be spreading good scents at the same time.
